Live bait vs Artificial Lures

Believe it or not, the answer is a little more complex than you might think. There are professional anglers firmly rooted in both camps, but their reasoning is interesting.

One well-known and well-respected professional angler from Florida had a surprising answer when asked which he would use in a tournament. He said he would fish artificial lures all day long because he believes they out fish live bait given enough time and a large enough territory covered.

But when asked why he uses live bait for charter customers he explained that is more of a safety issue. That it wouldn’t be smart to have five or six people using artificial bait right next to each other on his boat at the same time. Someone was bound to leave with an injury in his opinion.

Unsurprisingly, there are people that feel the exact opposite way. Another well-known and well-respected angler that was interviewed felt differently. He said he would use artificial lures with clients or with himself. He believed live bait was the only way to go.

So, who is right and who is wrong?

Following are some important aspects to consider before choosing one or the other.

Note: For this comparison live baited is considered to include dead, cut, or frozen bait that was once alive. Fly fishing and all plastic lures fall in the artificial lures section.

Size of Fish Caught – Live vs Artificial

Live Bait:

Live bait generally has a higher initial cost. The cost of a net is a big part of that expense, but a good cast net can last for years without having to buy another one. You must take into account your time value of money.

Live bait takes much more time to actually catch and ready for fishing. You also have the option to just buy the bait at a given location that sells it but the expense of always having to buy new bait adds up significantly over time.

Artificial Lures:

Although everyone likes the idea of buying just a small set of artificial lures and practicing until you reach an expert level, the truth is, more that likely you are going to end up buying countless artificial lures over the years. The latest and greatest lures are always hard to pass up to see if the infomercial or friendly recommendation was even close to being accurate.

And if you finish long enough, you will find that it is only a matter of time before the artificial lures get lost, stuck, or just damaged to the point where the can no longer be used. Countless other things can cause you to have to replace a lure, but the point is it will rack up costs over time. They are more reusable than live bait with a longer shelf life in general but that does not mean they last forever.

Live Bait:

Depends on the situation! Live bait if you plan on cast netting your own bait or have a source where can you get good bait for a reasonable price, but artificial lures work best when compared to purchasing live bait for every single fishing trip.

Storage / Messiness – Live Bait vs Artificial

Live Bait:

Every fisherman worth his salt knows you cannot just leave live bait in a bucket all day and expect them to survive. Live bait needs to be stored properly, alive or dead, to keep the fish biting. That’s why there are so many products dedicated to keeping live bait in the proper condition.

In short, live bait means more equipment to maintain it properly and more equipment means more money and more space. A live well, a dip net, a chum block all takes up valuable space on the boat. Also, no matter what, all the things need regular cleaning and maintenance which also adds to the expense and the time it takes to do all these things.

Artificial Bait:

The biggest benefit is that artificial lures do not take up near the space nor require the regular maintenance that live bait requires. It is much more sanitary than live bait and easier to maintain and store when not in use. Although there are some artificial lures that can cause a mess if damaged, overall they are very easy to keep clean and maintain.
